English:
Lord of the Hospital
(Señor del Hospital)
The construction of this religious building started in 1888, hence its late neoclassic style. It has various elements that decorate it. Furthermore it has certain characteristics from the romantic architecture and Renaissance. The Consecration and Blessing of Templo del Señor del Hospital took place on April 30, 1924. Subsequently, in 2010, the title of Santuario Diocesano del Señor del Hospital was given to it.

The best attraction of the church is the Cristo Negro placed at its niche in the main altar. It is a religious icon which has been venerated since 1560 when it arrived in Salamanca. The icon, made using a purepecha michoacana technique, is mostly made of maize cane paste, and it had generated various myths due to its mysterious change of color from white to black, the body’s position from an agonizing Christ to a dead Christ, and the miracles made over the centuries. Previously, the Cristo del Señor del Hospital, as it is commonly known, was at the capilla de la Virgen de la Asunción (today Templo Expiatorio), which dates back from 1560, when it was an annex to the hospital for indigenous people (no longer there). Both architectural pieces were planned by the

first bishop of Michoacán Don Vasco de Quiroga.

It is a tradition that every Holy Tuesday and during the Holy Week different pilgrimages and native dances from various regions in the country gather at the Santuario Diocesano, where the faithful ask for miracles or thank the Cristo Negro for favor they were granted. In June, as part of the celebrations of the Corpus Christi, the trade unions offer shingled wax consecrated to the Santísimo Sacramento and then visit and venerate the religious icon of the Cristo de pasta del maíz. lt is also venerated on the Thursday of the Lord's Ascension Day.

In addition to this enigmatic figure, the church has seven excellent classic wall paintings allusive to the life, passion and death of Jesus Christ, created by the zacatenano artist Candelario Rivas and carried out between 1921 and 1924. The decorations on the wall and vaults were made by the French priest Ives Grall, who was also in charge of creating decorations at the Templo de las Tres Caídas as chaplain.
