Regarding Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. This monument is interesting as its centerpiece, a large bust of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, does not carry his name. This is probably due to his being so well-known in Mexico that it is not necessary. The seven obelisks behind his bust carry the names of seven important persons from Salamanca's history. While Hidalgo needs no summary of his deeds, here are short summaries of the other important persons named on the monument:

Albino García Ramos (1774-1812) Independence fighter, executed by the Spanish in Celaya.

Andrés Delgado (1792-1816?) Independence fighter, executed by the Spanish.

Emeteria Valencia (1834-1893) Businesswoman and philanthropist, she founded schools.

Tomasa Esteves (1778-1814)
