and also has a Catholic school which is across the street from the main church building on which the maker is placed; the school serves Coronado K-8th grade youth. The architect, Irving John Gill, is considered a pioneer of the modern movement in architecture. He did most of his work in Southern California, especially in San Diego. In 1920, Sacred Heart Church was dedicated by Bishop Cantwell of the Diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles. Bishop Cantwell said, ”Sacred Heart Church is one of the most perfect examples of ecclesiastical architecture in California.”
