1. Tea on Tower Hill Marker

Inscription.
Conflict between a commercial need for tall buildings and the public desire to protect the Tower's views began in the 1860s. The multi-storey ‘Mazawattee’ tea warehouse was built on the edge of Tower Hill, controversially blocking the view of the castle.

The tea warehouse was bombed in 1940 and demolished by 1951. Its vaults still survive and were used to store wine until the 1980s. The tea legacy lives on today in the many cafés housed within the walls of the Tower Vaults.
