1. Mose Hampton 1808-1885 Marker
Inscription. Mose Hampton bought his freedom prior to the Civil War. He was a builder, assisted in laying out and surveying the town of Centre, a minister in the Episcopal Methodist North, and an inventor. Mr. Hampton owned land in the vicinity of this marker on both sides of US Highway 411. The site for Cedar Hill UMC, in Leesburg was chosen by Mose Hampton in the early 1800's. He was an honorary member of this church until his death.
 
Erected by Cherokee County Historical Society.
 
Location. 34° 9.308′ N, 85° 41.405′ W. Marker is in Centre, Alabama, in Cherokee County. Marker is at the intersection of West Main Street and Watson Drive, on the right when traveling west on West Main Street. Touch for map. Across from the Centre Police Dept (former USDA building). Marker is in this post office area: Centre AL 35960, United States of America.
