Daniels Farmhouse, D&H Canal Park at Lock 31 Towpath Trail and Riverside Trail
"The D&H" Railroad and Canal
— Hawley Mile Marker 367 —
This historic building dates to the early 1800s and was built using post and beam construction. In 1821 it was owned by Russell Daniels and was called the Daniels Farm. The Delaware & Hudson Canal was built directly behind the house; Lock 31 was placed here, and the value of the property increased greatly. In 1878 the property was sold to Ernst A. Hintze, a grocer from Brooklyn NY. Mr. Hintze remodeled the house and opened for business as a hotel fronting the canal. It became a store and hotel that served the boatmen on the canal and the passengers on the canal boats. There were 108 locks on the 108 mile canal from Honesdale PA to Rondout NY, providing a market for the anthracite of Pennsylvania to the Hudson River.
In 2001 the Wayne County Historical Society purchased the house and ten acres and started the process of preservation. The Society owns a mile of the canal including a trail along the old towpath and canal and a second trail along the Lackawaxen River. The park is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year. It is the only section of the D&H Canal open to the public in Pennsylvania.
