Inscription. This County was named for Colonel William Whitley, who was born in Virginia, August 17, 1749, and moved to Kentucky in 1775. He built Whitley House, the first brick house West of the Alleghenies, near Sanford, Kentucky.

This adventurous pioneer, Indian fighter, and Colonel in the Kentucky Militia was killed in the Battle of the Thames, Canada October 8, 1813.
