Lake Steamers
Commercial steamboating began in 1884 with the mining rush. In later years, fleets of tallfunnelled boats hauled freight, towed logs, and carried passengers and excursionists. Steamers served the lake and river communities until highways changed the transportation pattern.

Amenities on the steamers were plush by standards of the day. They had comfortable stuffed couches, carpets and rugs, and electric lights. People from the booming frontier cities of Spokane and Coeur d'Alene dressed up and boarded the boats for pleasure excursions on the lake and up the Coeur d'Alene and St. Joe Rivers.
