1. Ocker’s Barns and Outbuildings Marker
These buildings once stood on the north side of Montauk Highway in Oakdale on what was the Newton-Benjamin property which dates back to 1800. Mid-century, the property was sold to Henry Ocker’s, a Dutch immigrant, and his son Jacob (Jake) and became the Ockers Homestead. Jake Ockers, also known as the “Oyster King”, started the Bluepoint Oyster Company that was the largest shipper of oysters from the Great South Bay. The structures consist of board and batten siding, and mortise and tenon with wooden dowels and pins, which was very typical construction for that time.
