Regarding L.G. Murphy Sutler Store. Both Murphy and Fritz commanded Fort Stanton at the end of the Civil War. Fritz did serve at Ft Stanton in 1855, as an enlisted man in Co "K," 1st Regiment of Dragoons. There is no evidence Murphy was ever a Dragoon. He was however a veteran of 10 years enlisted service in the 5th U.S. Infantry (1851-1861) serving in Texas, Florida, Utah, and New Mexico prior to his discharge from the Regular Army and becoming an officer in the 1st New Mexico Cavalry 1861-66 where he achieved the rank of Brevet Major. Murphy was the ringleader of "The House" in the Lincoln County War, 1878. He died in October 1878 and is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
