1. Illinois Central Depot Marker

Inscription. Directly east is the Illinois Central Railroad Passenger Depot. The Illinois Central, the fourth railroad company to extend its service to Sioux Falls, opened its line and passenger depot in December, 1887. The building became a freight depot after passenger traffic fell off in the 1950’s as the automobile became the preferred means of transportation. It was purchased from the Illinois Central, remodeled into office space in 1982 by private investors, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in August, 1983.
