The Cathedral Church of St Michael
A house of worship, dedicated to the Archangel, St Michael, has stood on this site from the time of Henry I in the 12th Century. From its beginnings as a small Norman chapel, St Michael's progressively enlarged, benefiting from the attendant prosperity of Coventry's involvement with the thriving wool trade in the 13th century and culminating in the great rebuilding which began in 1373 under the patronage of the Botoners, a leading and influential merchant family of the day.

The Dissolution of the Cathedral Priory of St Mary in 1539 left Coventry without a cathedral until 1918 when the modern Bishopric of Coventry was constituted and St Michael's Church, one of the most beautiful perpendicular Gothic Churches in England, was elevated to cathedral status.

The night of 14 November 1940 witnessed the destruction of a building which had taken centuries to perfect, burnt out by incendiary bombs as a result of enemy action in the Second World War. Ironically, iron girders, introduced as strengthening to the roof tie-beams in the restoration of 1883-1890, twisted in the great heat of destruction and were instrumental in bringing down the masonry of the clerestories and arcades.
