Inscription. The New-York Historical Society
Designated Landmark New York City

Founded in 1804, this institution is the oldest museum in the city. Its research library and museum hold the architectural files of McKim, Mead & White, as well as the original watercolors of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. The central colonnaded section was completed in 1908 by York & Sawyer in an austere Classical style derived from the architecture of ancient Rome, while the wings were designed by Walker & Gillette 1938.
