On Christmas night in a blinding snowstorm, George Washington’s army crossed the Delaware and defeated Hessian troops in Trenton, NJ. , The war carried on through 1778 with the British attempting to separate New England from the southern colonies. By 1779, France and Spain had joined with the Americans, and Britain was faced with a possible war in Europe. On October 19, 1781, British General Cornwallis surrendered, and total peace came on October 19, 1783. 14,435 Americans died in the conflict.
