Three-sided concrete posts were placed every mile along the railroad as points of reference for the trainmen. This post tells us that it is 800 miles via rail to Richmond, Virginia, the railroad company’s headquarters.

Location. 28° 46.146′ N, 82° 17.58′ W. Marker is in Floral City, Florida, in Citrus County. Marker is on South Old Floral City Road, 0.2 miles north of Kabrich Road, on the left when traveling north. Marker and subject railroad mile post are located on the east side of the Withlacoochee State Trail, (a former railroad bed) and about 10 yards to the west of South Old Floral City Road. When we drive along the interstate highway system, we measure our progress by mile markers, which are placed just off the right shoulder of the roadway. Railroads have long had their mile markers, too. They are called mile posts. These mile posts are the geographical measure of a railroad line. Mile posts allow train crews to determine their exact location along otherwise nondescript stretches of geography.
