The 4.5 inch naval gun currently mounted here was a standard gun used in the Second World War against destroyers. With a slightly simplified turret, it was also used for land based anti aircraft defence from 1938 onwards.
Three anti aircraft batteries of four of these guns were built to defend Hartlepool in the 1940s and were located at Saltholme, Greatham and Brierton Lane.
However, the 4.5 inch has been placed in Heugh Emplacement No 2. only to give an idea of what the original gun would have looked like.
