Upon his arrival to L'Isle-Verte in 1920, the Canon J.-Alphonse Verreau (who became Monsignor in 1928) found the village school and the third presbytery in a disastrous state. His famous words were : The children first, ... me later.
The Construction
In 1922, this impressive school was built at a cost of $40,000. Entrusted to Les Soeurs de Saint- Rosaire [The Sisters of the Holy Rosary], it opened its doors to both boys and girls in 1923. The bell, "Joseph-Alphonse, Marie, Ovide" was raised the same year. The first principal was Regina Boucher, known as Soeur [Sister] Marie-de-St-Ovide.
L'Isle-Verte gratefully remembers Les Sœurs du Saint-Rosaire.
The Villa Rose-des-Vents
Such an institution can change, but does not die. Since 1994, the Villa Rose-des-Vents has offered apartments to the elderly, thanks to the contributions of the Governments and the population.
