1. Throston Engine House Marker
Throston Engine House was built 1838-1840 to accommodate a steam winding engine which hauled the coal wagons of the Stockton and Hartlepool Railway up 14 feet (4.3 metres) to the staiths of the Hartlepool Railway, at 3d (old pence) per ton of coal. This made it 1d (old penny) a ton more expensive to bring coal to Hartlepool on the Stockton and Hartlepool Railway than on the Hartlepool Railway. The Stockton and Hartlepool Railway found this arrangement unsatisfactory and so built its own dock at West Hartlepool in 1847.
Built of Magnesian limestone in a neo-classical style the roof was originally flat and carried a water tank. After the engine became redundant in 1847 the site was used as a reservoir. During the Second World War (1939-1945) it was a water softening plant.
