Seneca Women as Horticulturalists
Seneca women planted corn, beans, and squash, called the Three Sisters (Deoheko), in abundance, placing the plants together in small mounds of earth. At the center they planted four seeds of corn. A few weeks later, they planted a circle of beans around the corn so it could grow up the corn stalks. Around the beans, they planted a second circle, this time of squash seeds, to provide ground cover and keep the mound moist and weed free. Together the Three Sisters grew strong as the roots of each plant fed nutrients to the others.
When eaten together, corn, beans, and squash provide all of the nutrients the Seneca (Onondowahgah), people of the great hill, needed for healthy living.
