1. The Clearing Marker
Inscription. The Seneca people carved a clearing out of the forest in which to locate their town and homes. They used the trees they cut to build their houses and the surrounding palisade wall. The town, the homes, and the fields outside the palisade wall were all considered parts of the clearing and were the domain of Seneca women. They directed all activities within the clearing and controlled the production of corn, beans, and squash so vital to the life of the Seneca (Onodowahgah), people of the great hill.
