Historique

History

From 1961 to 1967, the MV Père Nouvel, the largest ice-breaker ferry of its time, operated between Pointe-au-Père and Baie-Comeau, ushering in a new era in maritime transportation for the entire region.

The Père Nouvel was originally designed for the State of Michigan by the Great Lakes Engineering Works shipyard. It was launched in 1952 in the Straits of Mackinac under its original name, Vacationland. Just five years later, a bridge replaced the ferry route and the ship was laid up.

In 1960, it was rechristened the Jack Dalton and used to carry truck trailers between Cleveland and Detroit on Lake Erie. Business was poor and the company failed within a few months, so the ship was laid up again.

During the 1950s, the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River benefited from rapid economic development, and better transportation was needed. The newly founded Compagnie de Navigation Nord-Sud purchased the Jack Dalton

and inaugurated a new roll-on/roll-off ferry service between Pointe-au-Père and Baie-Comeau on December 31, 1961. The vessel was named Père Nouvel after Father Henri Nouvel, who was the first missionary to cross the river in a canoe on December 8, 1664.

In 1967, the ship was sold to the Government of British Columbia and was renamed Sunshine Coast Queen. In service for over a decade in Howe Sound, it was replaced by larger, more modern and more efficient ferries. Sold to a succession of owners, it never sailed again as a commercial vessel.

In the end, while being towed to China, the vessel sank in a Pacific Ocean storm in waters over 2,000 metres deep off the coast of Oregon on December 3, 1987.

The Père Nouvel ushered in the modern era of business, industry and travel on the St. Lawrence River. It will long be remembered by passengers and crewmembers as a unique and noteworthy vessel.
