Smedberg Gate. . The Smedberg Gate, sponsored by the USNA Class of 1958, honors Vice Admiral William R. Smedberg, III, USN, USNA Class of 1926, who served as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy from 1956 to 1958. His inspirational leadership was the catalyst for the creation of the Navy - Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The facility honors USNA graduates and members of our Armed Forces who have served in America's wars and conflicts since the Revolutionary War. As you pass through this gate, you will see arches, panels and plaques honoring particular wars, campaigns, USNA Classes, Armed Forces units and individuals. The Stadium's facade facing the athletic field records many of our country's historic battles. All remembrances honor a proud legacy of service to our nation. May those who enter here to witness Midshipmen athletic contests and Brigade events depart with Vice Admiral Smedberg's sense of duty, honor and loyalty to country.
