Old Pike County Chancery Clerk's Office
Pike County was formed on December 9, 1815; carved out of Marion County. Her first Seat of Justice was located in the bustling community of Holmesville (Ratified by the Mississippi General Assembly n December 11, 1816). Situated on the Bogue Chitto River, Holmesville was named in honor of Major Andrew Hunter Holmes and was selected due to its proximity to the geographic center of the fledgling Pike County.
With the Illinois Central Railroad being completed through Pike County in 1857, and the "iron horse rail" becoming the new river of commerce Holmesville soon began to decline with the transfer of people and commerce to the rail towns. Another result of this shift is that the county seat was moved from Holmesville to Magnolia in 1873.
This County Office building was buit in 1848 and is thought to have housed the Pike County Clerk, although also referred to locally as the old Courthouse. The facility was expanded in 1934 by the DAR to be utilized as a community center, and was renovated in 1974 with toilets constructed inside the original building. In 2001 it was designated as a Mississippi Landmark Building and it continues to serve as a local community center as well as a voting precinct. This building has been renovated once again to stabilize structural and deterioration issues.
