Temple Emanu-el
Landmarks of New York
This limestone structure, built in 1923-1929, houses a Reform Jewish congregation founded in 1845. The Temple, adjacent Community House and Beth-el Chapel were designed by Robert D. Kohn, Charles Butler and Clarence S. Stein in an adaption of Moorish-Romanesque style, symbolic of the mingling of Eastern and Western culture. Mosaics by Hildreth Meiere decorate the temple sanctuary.
Erected 1966 by The New York Community Trust.
