Images
La première image connue de Percé vient d'un cartographe français du XVIIe siècle. Il faut attendre près d'une siècle pour voir apparaître, vers 1760, une gravure de Hervey Smyth, artiste militaire faisant partie des troupes de Wolfe. Celle-ci représente le rocher alors percé de deux arches. C'est dire comme ces rares images nous en apprennent beaucoup !
Licence
Dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, avec la vogue de la peinture en plein air, la Gaspésie attire de plus en plus d'artistes qui s'attardent parfois à Percé. Tant et si bien qu'un règlement municipal, voté en 1862, impose aux peintres qui prolongent leur séjour au-delà de deux ou trois mois une licence de six dollars.
James
Vers 1887, le peintre américain Frederick James fait construire sur le cap Canon qui surplombe le rocher une magnifique villa aujourd'hui indissociable du paysage de Percé. Actuel
Depuis 1983, le musée Le Chafaud permet notamment de découvrir les œuvres d'artistes importants inspirés par Percé. Pendant l'été, des peintres et des sculpteurs accueillent les visiteurs dans leur atelier ou exposent dans des galeries d'art de la région. Enfin, depuis 2007, l'Université Laval reçoit dans l'ancienne villa du peintre Frederick James l'école internationale d'été de Percé.

Clichés
Dès ses débuts, la photographie attire à Percé de nombreux photographes réputés comme Louis Bienvenu ou William Notman. Même un peintre, Paul-Émile Borduas, travaille ici comme photographe en 1938 et laisse d'inoubliables clichés. En 1950, pour le magazine Vogue, la célèbre photographe américaine Lida Moser saisit à Percé de lumineuses images.

Centre
En 1956, le couple d'artistes Suzanne Guité et Alberto Tommi aménage dans une ancienne grange de la compagnie Robin le Centre d'art de Percé. On y trouve un petit théâtre, une galerie d'exposition, un cinéma et différents ateliers. Le Centre devient le lieu de rencontre de presque tous les artistes québécois de l'époque, débutant dans les beaux-arts, le théâtre et la chanson.

Every picture...
The first known image of Percé dates back to a 17th century French cartographer. And it was not until close to a century later, around 1760, that an engraving was made by Hervey Smyth, one of Wolfe's men. The engraving

Outdoor painting was much in vogue in the second half of the 19th century and the Gaspé Peninsula began to attract more and more artists, some of whom would linger for long periods in Percé. Indeed, the village became so popular that a municipal by-law of 1862 imposed a license fee of $6 on all painters staying more than two or three months.
James
Around 1887, the American painter Frederick James had a splendid villa constructed atop Cape Canon overlooking the Rock. Today it's difficult to imagine how the village would look without it. Many famous American artists—including Georgia O'Keefe—were his guests, and it was there in his studio that he painted Percé until his death in 1907.

Present day
Since 1983, Musée Le Chafaud has been presenting exhibitions featuring works by major artists inspired by Percé. During the summer, painters and sculptors open their studios to visitors or exhibit their art in galleries around the region. And since 2007 Laval University's Faculty of Planning, Architecture, and Visual Arts has hosted

Photographs
From the earliest days of photography, Percé attracted scores of [notable] photographers, including Louis Bienvenu and William Notman. Even the painter Paul-Émile Borduas worked here as a photographer in 1938, leaving a set of unforgettable photos behind. And in 1950 respected American photographer Lida Moser took a series of luminous shots for Vogue magazine.
Poets
Percé was also a great source of inspiration for writers and poets such as Rina Lasnier and Robert Choquette. In August 1944 André Breton, the father of surrealism, visited the region. He wrote that the Rock "evoked in him the image of a vessel forever under imperious command. On board, everything points to the captain's eye, a captain who also appears to be something of a magician."
