Inscription. It's said that Grand Lake has always had tourists. Even the original visitors, the Ute and Arapaho for example, would come in the summer to hunt and fish in the largest natural lake in Colorado, but would leave when winter approached. Then, as now, the Lake's beauty and the pleasant summer climate drew visitors to enjoy boating, fishing, and hiking. Soon, early hotels and cabins welcomed visitors.

As automobiles became more accessible, many visitors established their own summer homes along the Lake and elsewhere in the village. The Grand Lake Yacht Club was formed, and the town's summer activities featured dances, sometimes even with bands imported from Denver! When Rocky Mountain National Park opened, and a road was built across the continental divide, visitors driving automobiles could come to Grand Lake for a just a day or a week, and head "back east" with ease.

Soon, dude ranches were established, adding to the three Grand Lake riding stables, and providing more fun activities for the summer visitor. There was even a permanent rodeo site where the post office is now located. Parades and buffalo barbecues were soon added to the fun.

Some basics haven't changed. There are still parades and barbecues, fishing, hiking, exploring, boating and other fun summer activities. There are lots of winter activities

too… snowmobiling on over 100 miles of groomed trails and the frozen lakes, cross-country skiing, skating and snowshoeing. It's thought that the Smith-Eslick Cottage Court was used at least occasionally in the winter. Can you imagine that? Must have been chilly, with only cardboard insulation and a wood stove to make the room warmer!
