Lt. Gen. Claire Lee Chennault
(1890-1958) spent his childhood in Gilbert. He pioneered air pursuit tactics, created and led "The Flying Tigers,” Volunteer Air Forces for China against Japan. Advisor to Chiang Kai-Shek. Commanding General U. S. 14th Air Force in China, World War II (1943-1945). Buried Arlington National Cemetery.
 
Erected 1976 by Franklin Parish Bicentennial Commission.
