Regarding Monument to Nachi Cocom. Nachi Cocom (ca. 1510 - 1562), later called Juan Cocom. A halach uinik maya ("real Mayan man" or local leader) of the Cocomes of the province of Sotuta, he was a descendant of the lords of Mayapán. He faced the Spanish conquerors in numerous battles as they attempted to take over the area. He was eventually beaten and captured by the Spanish near the new town of Mérida in 1541. His feat has led to him being commemorated as a hero. Today, many public centers and facilities in the Yucatan Peninsula carry his name.
