The splendid vista of the City Hall (1906) dominates the view from here, but it is by no means the only building of architectural or cultural merit to be seen. Take a circuit around the City Hall and discover some of the highlights of Donegall Squares North, East, South and West.

The Linen Hall Library, founded in 1788, has occupied its current building on Donegall Square North since 1888. It houses one of the most renowned collections of Irish material in the world. Beside it runs Fountain Street, where for many years, spring water was distributed to the townsfolk from barrels carried in by donkeys. Continue on to Castle Street then turn into Chapel Lane to see St. Mary's Chapel (1784), the first Catholic Church in the city.

Follow Wellington Place towards Royal Belfast Academical Institution (1814) on College Square East. Then either proceed along College Avenue and Divis Street to St. Peter's Cathedral (1866), the mother church of the Diocese of Down & Connor, or, proceed up Great Victoria Street to see the Grand Opera House (1895), then call in for refreshments at the Crown Bar (1885).

Alternatively, head for Donegall Place and Royal Academy for some first class shopping.
