1. Church of St. Patrick, Cumberland Marker

Inscription. A log chapel dedicated to St. Mary was built on this site in 1791. The first parishioners were mostly English Catholics from Southern Maryland. A brick church replaced the log building in 1939. Cumberland became a major center of transportation and commerce in the mid-19th century with construction of the National Road, C&O Canal, and B&O Railroad. Irish immigrants drawn by economic opportunity brought, substantial growth to the parish. The present church, designed by Irish-born architect John Tehan was completed in 1851 and dedicated to St. Patrick.
