Divided By Design. . Similar to the interior of their house, the Wilsons' yard was separated into public and private areas. The front garden featured a formal and ornamental landscape style intended for visitors and passersby. Private, utilitarian needs were met behind the house away from the public eye. The property's gardens largely reflected 19th-century landscape theory. Like their residence, the Wilsons' landscape choices may have drawn from the ideals of Andrew Jackson Downing.
