1. Cleburne’s Division Marker

Inscription. This division was commanded by Major General Patrick R. Cleburne, and consisted of Granbury’s Texas Brigade, Govan’s Arkansas Brigade, and Lowry’s Alabama and Mississippi Brigade. They were engaged around the Cotton Gin, which stood S.E. of the Carter House. It is said that you could always tell where Cleburne’s Division was on the field, because their division flag was blue with the full moon and was usually to be found at the heaviest fighting. Cleburne’s Division lost 53% casualties including their beloved commander.

2. Confederate Major General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne. Civil War Confederate Major General. The most popular Confederate division commander, he was known as the "Stonewall of the West." He was born in County Cork, Ireland, appropriately on St. Patrick's Day. A naturalized American citizen and an adopted Arkansan, he grew up in Ireland, where his father was a well known doctor in the county. He was taught at home where he received an Episcopal church education. He apprenticed himself to a pharmacist to prepare for a medical career.
