1. Hamilton Dock By Numbers Marker
Inscription. Hamilton Graving Dock opened in 1867. It was almost twice the size of No. 2 Graving Dock which had been completed in 1826.

The dock holds approximately 3 million gallons of water, the same volume as five and half swimming pools. That's 13,638,276 litres!

£1,500 In 1872 the Harbour Commissioners reported that Hamilton Dock was 'very fully occupied' and it raised them a revenue of £1,500.

In the late 1860s, the average fee paid by ship owners for a spell in Hamilton Graving Dock was £13.

450ft long 50ft wide 22ft deep
The dock is 450 feet long (137m), 50 feet wide (15m) at the bottom and 22 feet (7m) deep.

Over 200,000 tons
Over 200,000 tons (203,209 metric tonnes) of sleech were excavated to create the dock.

Hamilton Graving Dock cost just under £30,000 to build, a huge investment. By comparison, a small house cost around £150 to build in the 1860s.
