1. St. Anthony of Padua Church Marker

Inscription. Formed in 1866, it is the oldest Catholic congregation in the United States established to serve Italian immigrants. This structure, dedicated in 1888, was the first house of worship constructed by Italians in our nation. Since its founding, St. Anthony’s has been staffed by the Franciscan friars, founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209. The Franciscans were the first missionaries to come to America, journeying with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage in 1493.
