1. Whittington Rail Skiff Marker
Inscription. Luther E. Whittington built this rail skiff in 1926 for Clifton O. Whittington, who started as a professional "pusher" of rail skiffs on the Patuxent River in 1923. In the marshes, boats were pushed using a long push pole. Two oak paddles were also carried. Earlier rail skiffs were double-ended, but by the time this boat was built, skiffs were being constructed with a small transom or square stern. This allowed for the mounting of an outboard engine, if needed.
