1. Yankee Cove Marker
Many yards in Whitehead boast a lilac bush which originated from the lilac bushes in Yankee Cove
Kayak/boating enthusiasts love the scenic voyage through "The Runs” via Yankee Cove & The Basin.
1760 – Seasonal fishermen began fishing from Yankee Cove. Gradually, a permanent community built-up.
1866 – The first land grants for Yankee Cove were issued.
1874 – Census showed 8 households with 32 people.
1857 - The Diphtheria epidemic took the lives of many residents.
1888-1881 - A schoolhouse was built. The first teacher (Helen Martin) taught 20 children under 12. The school was also used for church functions & weddings.
1894 - Census showed 54 people, half were children.
1902 or 1903 - A forest fire originating in Little Dover burned its way to Yankee Cove.
1943 - The first postmaster, Alex Munroe, was appointed.
1946 - Yankee Cove schoolhouse was closed. By this time it was common practice for residents to move across the harbour to Whitehead, often floating their houses rather than rebuilding.
1957 - The last residents (Mr.& Mrs. W. Peitzsche) moved to Whitehead.
1959 – The Schoolhouse was torn down.
1983 - August; The last house on the Yankee Cove side of the Harbour was torn down, the home of Albert Munroe.
