1. Inner Defenses Marker
Inscription. Here ran the Inner Line of Lynchburg defenses thrown up by General D. H. Hill in June, 1864. General John C. Breckinridge, confronting General Hunter in the Shenandoah Valley, made a forced march to forestall Hunter. Hill constructed a shallow line of trenches, occupied by Breckinridge, and hospital convalescents and Home Guards. It became a reserve line when General Early arrived.
 
Erected 1941 by Virginia Conservation Commission. (Marker Number Q-6-3.)
