Inscription. July 20, 1864. Four regiments of Reynolds’ Arkansas brigade, Walthall’s div., Stewart’s A.C., [CS] having deployed abreast at old Mt. Zion Ch., moved in a right oblique across Howell Mill & Collier rds. into the wooded ravine.

The assault fell upon Knipe’s & Robinson’s brigades, Williams’ div., 20th A.C. [US] posted, with artillery, on the far side (N.) of the ravine.

Subjected to enfilading fire from right & left & with no support but Selden’s battery [CS] on the left, Reynolds’ brigade was forced to withdraw, after a second attempt to cross the ravine.
