Inscription. Lawyer, congressman, abolitionist, ironmaker, and defender of free public schools in Pennsylvania, lived in a house that stood on this site. He moved from here in 1842.

Stevens emerged from a background of poverty to become a prominent political leader in the years before the Civil War. He moved to Gettysburg around 1815.
