1. Military Occupation Marker

Inscription. The Independent Junior Fire Company was formed in 1842. Their firehouse was constructed in 1852 and altered in 1881. During the Civil War, the Juniors' firehouse was used by the U.S. Army for various purposes and served as a field hospital to treat the wounded. The Juniors remained at this location until November 21, 1993 when the Company was moved to its new home on Eastern Boulevard.

More about this marker. In the upper right is a drawing of The Junior Hose Company, circa 1865. In the left center is another sketch of the fire house. This drawing of the Independent Junior Fire Company was sketched by Union soldier James Ireland of Company A, 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, while stationed in Hagerstown during the war. In the lower right is a photo of The firehouse as it appeared in 1894.
