The regiment was commanded by Colonel Jacob Fry at the battle.
Inscription.
U.S.
61st Illinois Infantry,
Miller's (2d) Brig., Prentiss' (6th) Div.,
Army of the Tennessee.

This regiment relieved one of Hurlbut's regiments and was engaged here from about 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 6, 1862.
