3. James 3.80-inch Rifle, Type 2, Series 3
This James rifle, considered by historians to be a "Type 2, Series 3," was cast by Ames Manufacturing Co., of Massachusetts, in 1861. It was inspected by George T. Balch, weighing 917 pounds. It carries the registry number 11. The other piece at this position is a "Type 2, Series 4." The only significant difference is the markings on the muzzle. That piece is registry number 73, weighing 919 pounds, cast in 1862, also by Ames Manufacturing.
