Inscription. This memorial park and monument honor the memory of Elder Joseph Standing of Salt Lake City, Utah, a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (Mormon) who was killed here by a mob July 21, 1879. His companion, Elder Rudger Clawson, who later became president of the Council of the Twelve Apostles of the church, was unharmed.

The cooperation of W. C. Puryear and family who donated the land and were most helpful in other ways, made this memorial possible.

Erected 1952 by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Location. 34° 55.215′ N, 85° 0.048′ W. Marker is near Varnell, Georgia, in Whitfield County. Marker is on Standing Road, 1.3 miles north of Varnell Road (State Highway 2), on the right when traveling north. From Spring Street & Main in Varnell Georgia, go west on Varnell Road (Ga. Hwy 2) for 1.9 miles. Turn right on Lake Kathy Road (222). Go north for .2 miles, where the road name changes to Standing Road. Continue on Standing Road for .1 mile, then make a slight right at the fork to stay on Standing Road. Go north on Standing Road for 1 mile. The park and marker will
