Inscription. Christian Frederick Martin (1796-1873) established his first instrument shop on this site in the late Fall of 1833. He emigrated here with his family from the small town of Markneukirchen, Germany to form what would become C.F. Martin & Co., one of the World's most revered makers of musical instruments. Martin's innovations in acoustic guitar design—including the X-Braced Flat-Top Guitar and the Dreadnought Guitar—exerted a formative and lasting influence on American music and culture.
