Given to the West Virginia board of education for Shepherd College by Upton S. Martin in memory of his father, U.S. Martin (1859-1957), 32nd degree mason, Mayor of Shepherdstown six years, member West Virginia house of delegates six years, and a participant in civic affairs here for fifty years.
 
Erected 1961 by Historic Shepherdstown Commission.
