Regarding Alexander Mebane. Alexander Mebane, Jr. (November 26, 1744 to July 5, 1795) served as sheriff of Orange County in 1777.

He served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, March 15, 1781.

On September 12, 1781, Mebane narrowly escaped a tory raid at Hillsborough, N.C. The raid was lead by David Fanning. He spread the word about the attack, then joined the militia forces that attacked Fanning's men at the Battle of Lindley's Mill.

Mebane was elected to the General Assembly and served as auditor of the Hillsborough Constitutional Convention of 1788 and the Fayetteville Convention of 1789.

Mebane served on the first board of trustees of the University of North Carolina. In 1792, he served on the committee that chose New Hope Chapel Hill as the site for a new school. Mebane helped lay the first cornerstone of the new campus, October 12, 1793.

Also in 1793, Mebane was elected to the Third Congress of the United States. He served in Congress from 1793 to 1795, at Philadelphia.

The town of Mebane is named in his honor.
