Across the canal stands the Tredegar Iron Works, which, with the Armory that once stood beside it, was the greatest industrial complex in the South. Run by Joseph Reid Anderson, the Iron Works, with a work force of immigrants and free and enslaved Blacks, produced up to half of all the armaments used in the Confederate war effort.
