Inscription. First American scientist awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (Physics – 1907); Dean of American Optics; Measured velocity of light, ether drift, standard meter, steller diameters. Lived here during childhood.

He grew up in the rough, booming mining towns of Murphy's Camp, California and Virginia City, Nevada. In 1869 he went to Annapolis as an appointee of President U. S. Grant. This house is locally known as the Carlimbretti/Chase/Mercer House. It was built in 1860 and was also the home of Albert Michelson, whose father operated a dry goods store in Murphys from 1856 to the 1860's.
