1. Osceola Hornets Marker
Inscription. Upon the Civil War's outbreak, Capt. Charles Bowen raised a company known as the "Osceola Hornets," participating in the battles of Belmont and Shiloh. Initially 100 strong, only seven returned. During Reconstruction, Bowen was instrumental in quelling carpetbagger-inspired lawlessness in the "Black Hawk War" of 1872.
