Multiple Purpose Management in Action. . This young Ponderosa Pine forest was thinned by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 to improve the growth of the remaining trees[.] The first commercial harvest was made in 1959 when the area was thinned again for posts and poles. From now on a commercial cutting can be made about every twenty years. The best trees have been pruned to produce knot-free lumber. Young trees becoming established will replace the older trees as they are harvested. Under multiple-use management, this roadside area has received special treatment. Improved vigor of the forest provides better habitat for wildlife and improved water production as well as growing better quality timber products for a growing America.
